Robyn Berger

Robyn Berger is a Tax Executive in the Corporate Department at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in tax advisory law, international tax, and exchange control. She advises on cross-border tax and exchange control implications of both outbound and inbound investments, with a keen focus on African investments, serving a broad client base across private equity, fintech, consumer markets, energy and natural resources, engineering, financial services, hospitality, insurance, and retail sectors.

Having previously led the International Tax team at one of the Big Four auditing firms, Robyn has broad technical skills in corporate tax, international tax, and exchange control. She advises multinationals investing into South Africa and South African multinationals with outbound investments, including advice on ownership structures, tax residency, controlled foreign company legislation, double tax agreements, foreign tax credits, thin capitalisation, and transfer pricing constraints. She also advises on the establishment of private equity funds and the acquisition of target portfolio companies, leads due diligence and internal restructure projects across several African countries, and has acted as lead counsel on tax dispute resolution matters in various African jurisdictions including Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Robyn holds a BCom in Financial Accounting from the University of South Africa, as well as Higher Diplomas in Taxation and in International Taxation from the Rand Afrikaans University (now University of Johannesburg). She is a member of the SAICA exchange control committee that meets with the South African Reserve Bank quarterly, and a member of the SAIT international tax committee.
