HB Senekal

HB Senekal is a Partner in the Johannesburg office, practicing in the firm's Competition Law practice. He is one of the first competition lawyers in South Africa and began his career with the Competition Commission shortly after the promulgation of the Competition Act in 1999. He has over 16 years of experience in private practice representing high-profile clients in South Africa and across Africa, including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Morocco, COMESA, and CEMAC.

Mr. Senekal advises on all aspects of competition law, including merger notifications, cartels, abuses of dominance, and competition and regulatory litigation across sectors such as oil and gas, mining, renewable energy, property, financial services, and transport. His recent representations include advising Vivo Energy Namibia on its acquisition of GasIT, Sanlam Emerging Markets on its acquisition of Masawara Investments (requiring approvals in 4 African jurisdictions and COMESA), Sibanye-Stillwater on its acquisition of Lonmin Plc, and Atterbury Properties on various property transactions.

HB holds a B Proc, LLM in Contract Law and LLM in Mercantile Law from the University of Pretoria, and has completed the EU Competition Law Summer School at Cambridge University. He is admitted to practice in Gauteng (2005) and the Western Cape (2011), and is fluent in Afrikaans and English.

He has been recognized by Legal 500 as a recommended lawyer (2023), by Best Lawyers in Competition/Antitrust Law in South Africa (2020-2023), and by Who's Who Legal as a leading practitioner (2022-2023).
