Janine Simpson

Janine Simpson is a Director at DLA Piper in Johannesburg, heading the firm's South African competition practice. She is a specialist in Competition Law with over 20 years of experience advising local and international clients on all aspects of African competition law, including merger control, cartel and prohibited practice investigations, dawn raids, exemption applications, and competition law compliance and training.

She has advised clients including CIVH, Maziv, DFA, Vumatel, Seacom, and Herotel on numerous mergers in the telecommunications sector, including the Maziv and Vodacom merger approved by the Competition Appeal Court of South Africa in 2025. She has also advised Afrimat on its acquisition of Lafarge South Africa, Remgro on mergers involving eMedia and Kagiso Tiso Holdings, and C Cell Holdings on competition matters arising from its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Prior to joining DLA Piper, she worked in the competition practices of various leading South African law firms, lectured constitutional law, and clerked for the Honourable Justice.

Janine holds an LL.M (cum laude) from Emory University (2002), where she was the top LL.M student, and a BCom (Law) and LLB (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria (1996). She is an admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa. She has been recognised by Chambers Global (2025‑2026) in Band 5 for Competition/Antitrust, by Best Lawyers® (2014‑2026) for Competition/Antitrust Law, and has been listed in the GCR 100 – Elite.
