Charles Douglas

Charles Douglas is a Partner in the Johannesburg office, practicing in the firm's Mergers and Acquisitions and Corporate Commercial practice. He specializes in both public and private M&A and ECM work, with experience across Australia, Botswana, DRC, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, New Zealand, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. His practice is enhanced by his specialization in sustainability and ESG considerations, including impact investing, governance, renewable energy, and nature-based carbon solutions.

Mr. Douglas has advised on numerous landmark transactions, including Mediterranean Shipping Company and Remgro on the ZAR 74 billion acquisition of Mediclinic, Imperial on DP World's ZAR 12.7 billion takeover bid, Allianz SE on the establishment of a joint venture with Sanlam, AB InBev and SAB on multiple B-BBEE transactions, and Kwande Capital on the purchase of Nampak Glass for approximately ZAR 1.5 billion. He also advised Sasol on various disposals and strategic joint ventures.

He holds an LLM from the University of the Witwatersrand, an LLB from the University of Cape Town, and a BA from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is admitted as an attorney of the High Court in South Africa and as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia. Charles is chairman of the Wilderness Trust, a conservation and education-focused non-profit.
