Sally Hutton

Sally Hutton is a Partner at Webber Wentzel in Johannesburg and a specialist in private equity and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). She advises on all aspects of M&A transactions (both public and private) for private equity funds, including structuring advice, consortium and shareholders arrangements, management participation arrangements, Black Economic Empowerment (B‑BBEE) structures, funding arrangements, and reorganisations. She has acted in most of South Africa's highest‑profile private equity transactions over the past 20 years.

She is consistently ranked as a leading practitioner by Chambers Global (2006–2026), Best Lawyers (2008–2026), Legal 500 (2012–2025), IFLR1000, and Who's Who Legal, and was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Private Equity by Best Lawyers in 2010, 2018, and 2023. She was honoured with the "Woman Professional of the Year" award at the 2016 South African Professional Services Awards and received two awards at the 2018 awards, namely "Professional of the Year – Law Class" and the overall "South African Professional of the Year – Overall Winner". She was also inducted into the IFLR Women DealMakers Hall of Fame in 2024.

Sally holds an LL.M (Taxation) (cum laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1999), a Master of Studies (Legal Research) from the University of Oxford (1994), an LLB (magna cum laude) from the University of Cape Town (1992), and a BA (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town (1990). She also completed the Programme in Leading Professional Service Firms at Harvard Business School (2012). She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
