Werner Rysbergen

Werner Rysbergen is a Director at DLA Piper in Johannesburg, specialising in competition law. He advises local and international clients on all aspects of competition law, including merger control, cartel and other prohibited practice investigations, dawn raids, exemption applications, and competition law compliance and training. He has particular expertise in the industrials sector—including manufacturing, agri-processing, and infrastructure-linked industries—as well as financial services and technology.

He has advised Barloworld on all aspects of a c. USD 1 billion cash offer from a consortium including the Barloworld CEO and Saudi Arabia‑based Zahid Group to acquire all issued shares in Barloworld, and ASP Isotopes Inc. on its acquisition of the entire issued share capital of Renergen by way of a scheme of arrangement. Prior to joining DLA Piper, he worked in the competition practice of another leading South African law firm and spent four years at the Competition Commission of South Africa.

Werner holds an LL.B from the University of Stellenbosch (2004), a Postgraduate Diploma in EC Competition Law (with merit) from King's College London (2010), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Economics for Competition Law (with merit) from King's College London (2012). He is admitted as an attorney, conveyancer, and notary of the High Court of South Africa.
