Verlie Oosthuizen

Verlie Oosthuizen is Head of Social Media Law at Shepstone & Wylie in Durban, specialising in employment law, social media law, and Protection of Personal Information (POPIA) compliance. She chairs, prosecutes, and defends internal disciplinary hearings, advises on employment equity, bargaining and collective rights, and appears in Labour Court and High Court proceedings. She has served as an acting Judge at the Labour Court.

She provides training to executives and business owners on employee social media activity, devises social media policies and procedures, and advises on social media strategies and litigation. She also develops bespoke data protection strategies for companies, provides POPIA compliance training to multinationals, and advises on FICA compliance, having appeared in Financial Intelligence Centre tribunals on behalf of clients. She has expanded her practice into school governance, serving as a governor on the Durban Girls College Board, and provides advice and training on school governance issues. She speaks regularly at conferences and seminars on employment, school, social media, and related issues.

Verlie holds a BA and LLB from the University of KwaZulu‑Natal (UKZN) and an LLM in Information and Communications Law from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).
