Robert Cohen

Robert Cohen is a Senior Consultant in the Corporate Department at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets. He advises on investments into South Africa as well as outward investments by South African companies into Sub-Saharan Africa and further abroad, with clients including listed South African conglomerates and foreign multinationals.

Robert has advised Barloworld on its multijurisdictional acquisition of Caterpillar Inc's Bucyrus businesses in South Africa, Botswana, and Siberia; CFR Pharmaceuticals on the high-profile Adcock Ingram transaction; Capital Appreciation Limited on its listing as the first SPAC on the Main Board of the JSE; Associated British Foods on its take-private of Illovo Sugar; and drafted the settlement agreement for the well-known silicosis class action litigation against certain mining companies. He leads teams on important corporate transactions, many of which involve cross-border elements, and is instrumental in the support, development, and training of lawyers in the M&A practice group.

He has been ranked in Band 4 for Corporate/M&A by Chambers and Partners (2017–2019), recognised by Who's Who Legal for Mergers & Acquisitions (2018, 2019), recognised by Best Lawyers for Mergers and Acquisitions (2017), and is a past winner of the ILO Client Choice Award for Mergers and Acquisitions in South Africa.
