Philippa Sutherland

Philippa Sutherland is a Senior Associate at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in real estate law, commercial property transactions, and property finance. She has experience in all aspects of commercial property law, conveyancing and notarial practice, property development, and real estate due diligence.

Philippa has advised lenders on the financing of various renewable energy projects, including the Kenhardt plants in the Northern Cape, the Mulilo Total Hydra Storage project, and the 120MW Doornhoek project. She has also advised Capitalworks Private Equity on its share sale acquisition of The Building Company from Pepkor Holdings; IWG Plc and Regus on the negotiation and conclusion of lease agreements for new and existing centres in South Africa; Zara Retail South Africa on flagship store leases at V&A, Sandton City, Gateway Mall, and Canal Walk; and Coca‑Cola Beverages South Africa on the sale of non‑core properties. Her practice covers sale and acquisition of immovable property, leasing arrangements, development of industrial, retail, commercial, and renewable energy projects, and development leases.

Philippa holds a BA and an LL.B from Rhodes University. She is an admitted attorney, conveyancer, and notary public of the High Court of South Africa.
