Michael Murray

Michael Murray is a Senior Consultant in the Dispute Resolution Department at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in dispute resolution and alternative dispute resolution. He advises clients on complex commercial disputes, mass tort and class action matters, and settlement frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.

Prior to joining Bowmans in 2018, Michael spent 25 years as in‑house counsel at Anglo American South Africa, where he was responsible for commercial, M&A, and the management of significant disputes in both the UK and South Africa. He represented Anglo American South Africa in the Occupational Lung Disease Working Group, which developed a comprehensive solution to occupational lung disease compensation in the South African gold mining industry, including the 2018 settlement of the silicosis and TB class action. He was nominated by Anglo American South Africa to be a trustee of the Tshiamiso Trust, where he chairs the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee.

Michael holds a BA from the University of Cape Town and an LL.B from the University of the Witwatersrand. He is a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR UK) accredited mediator.
