Johan Henning

Johan Henning is a Partner based in Johannesburg. His primary practice area is Insurance Law, and he is an expert in insurance, re-insurance, medical schemes and other aspects of financial sector laws which impact financial institutions.

His key clients include some of the largest financial conglomerates (insurance, banking and financial services groups) in South Africa and abroad.

He has advised on the restructuring of insurance groups, the transferring of insurance portfolios from one insurer to another, and has vast experience in establishing and advising cell captive insurers in South Africa. He has further advised on and drafted the agreements required for the creation of some of the largest bancassurance relationships between large banks and insurers in South Africa.

His recognition includes being named by Chambers Global 2019–2026 as a ranked lawyer, named by Best Lawyers 2021–2026 as a leading individual and Lawyer of the Year for Insurance Law 2022, and named by Who's Who Legal 2010–2014 as a listed lawyer (Insurance & Reinsurance).

He holds an LLB (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria (1992) and a BLC (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria (1990). He is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and a member of the board of trustees of a pension fund.
