Jeremy Prain

Jeremy Prain is a Partner in the Cape Town office, practicing in the firm's Maritime Law and Shipping, Logistics and Commodities practice. He has a deep understanding of the shipping and logistics sector in South Africa and works closely with colleagues across Africa to provide comprehensive services in commercial, litigious, and casualty response matters.

Mr. Prain has been involved in various contentious matters, including acting for a leading international bunker supplier in judicial review proceedings before the Supreme Court of Appeal, advising ship owners and commodities traders on disputes with the South African Revenue Service arising from vessel detentions, and assisting international banks and financiers in workouts to sell vessels and resolve complex cross-border insolvency issues. He has acted in complex arrest proceedings before the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal, including the vessels Haralambos, New Elly, and New Endevor. He has also advised marine liability insurers on the wreck removal of the fishing trawler “Elke M” and on the “Cosco Sao Paulo” container explosion and fire.

Jeremy holds an LLM in Shipping Law from the University of Cape Town, and BA and LLB degrees from Stellenbosch University. He is admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa and as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. He is a member of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa.

He has been ranked by Chambers Global in Band 2 for Shipping in South Africa (2023-2026) and recognized by the 2023 Business Today Lawyer Awards as a pioneering shipping lawyer.
