Garyn Rapson

Garyn Rapson is a Partner based in Johannesburg and an environmental law expert. His primary practice area is Environmental Law.

His work is cross-sectoral, and his clients operate in the energy, mining, oil and gas, industrial, waste management, biotechnology and construction sectors, among others. The nature of his work requires him to be involved in every phase of his clients' businesses, from the initial permitting stages through to the rehabilitation and closure of operations.

Throughout this business lifecycle, he also runs complex environmental litigation matters and is intimately involved in corporate transactional advice, including mergers, acquisitions, listings and disposals.

His recognition includes being named by Chambers Global 2017–2026 as a ranked lawyer; named by Best Lawyers 2022–2026 as a leading individual and Lawyer of the Year for Environmental Law 2023 and 2025; named by Legal 500 2021 as a legal expert; and named by Who's Who Legal 2017 as a leading lawyer (Environment).

He holds an LLM (with distinction) in Environmental Law from the University of the Witwatersrand (2012), an LLB from Rhodes University (2007) and a B.Sc from Rhodes University (2005), along with several specialist certificates from the University of Potchefstroom. He is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
