Brian Patterson

Brian Patterson is an Executive in the firm's Employment Law practice at ENS. He specialises in compensation and remuneration, distress, restructuring and business rescue, global mobility, restraint of trade agreements, executive terminations, redundancy and retrenchments, transfers of business, employment equity, collective bargaining, and the law relating to confidentiality and privacy.

He has extensive African employment law experience and provides international employment law advice to clients and overseas law firms in the United States, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. He has advised corporate clients across most sectors, including financial services, retail, hospitality, mining, metal engineering, ITC, and chemicals, and has been involved with some of the leading employment law cases reported in Southern Africa. He has personally argued many matters in the Labour Court and the Labour Appeal Court, has acted as a judge of the Labour Court, and was an assessor of the former Labour Appeal Court.

He holds a BA and an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand, and completed the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test for England and Wales. He is admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

Brian has been consistently recognized by Chambers Global and The Legal 500 EMEA in Employment, and by Best Lawyers in Labour and Employment Law and Employee Benefits Law, where he was named Employee and Benefits Lawyer of the Year in South Africa. He is co-author of the South African chapter of the Wolters Kluwer International Labour and Employment Compliance Handbook and is a regular speaker on employment and labour law issues.
