Simonne Heunis

Simonne Heunis is a Partner at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in energy law, infrastructure projects, and power purchase agreements. She has experience in commercial and corporate transactions in the energy and infrastructure space across Africa and the Middle East, with particular expertise in power purchase agreements, renewable energy projects, and public-private partnerships.

Simonne has advised the South African Government and the IPP Office on the evaluation of tenders for the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers (REIPP) Procurement Programme and the Baseload Energy Coal Procurement Programme. She has also advised Rand Merchant Bank on the 140MW Umsinde Emoyeni Wind Farm Project and the 140MW Khangela Emoyeni Wind Farm Project, negotiating power purchase agreements with Africa Clean Energy Development and Sibanye Stillwater and Rio Tinto respectively, with both projects reaching financial close on 28 May 2024 at a combined project cost of approximately ZAR 10 billion. Additionally, she has advised on the Gautrain Rapid Light Rail concession, lenders on a ZAR 1.9 billion facility for Sephaku Cement, and the Imvelo Consortium on the Department of Environmental Affairs accommodation PPP. She previously served as Senior Legal Manager for Aggreko, overseeing legal matters across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, including power purchase agreements, thermal and solar hybrid projects, fuel supply agreements, and EPC procurement.

Simonne holds an LL.B with distinction from the University of Pretoria and a Diploma in Advanced Corporate and Securities Law from UNISA. She was admitted as an Attorney in South Africa in 2011 and is a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society.
