Robert Appelbaum

Robert Appelbaum is an Executive Consultant specialising in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), project‑related and other transactional work. He has advised a substantial number of South African and Asian‑owned multinational companies on their expansion into Africa, with deep expertise across multiple African jurisdictions including Ghana, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Mozambique, Namibia, and others.

He has significant experience in the oil and gas, mining, infrastructure, power, construction, financial services, and healthcare sectors. He previously served as Honorary Business Representative for the Middle East and Africa Group for International Enterprise Singapore, the government agency driving Singapore's external economy, and was formally General Counsel of an international water treatment company.

Robert holds an LLB (1986) and a BA (1982) from the University of the Witwatersrand. He is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa. He has been consistently ranked by Best Lawyers (2008‑2026), Legal 500 (2016‑2018, 2023), IFLR1000 (2019‑2022), and Chambers Global (2013‑2018) as a leading lawyer in Corporate/M&A and Construction. He serves on the Executive Committee of the Indian Bar Association and is a Director of the Centre for Indian Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand.
