Nick Grootes

Nick Grootes is a Director and Head of the Finance, Projects and Restructuring practice at DLA Piper in Johannesburg, specialising in Banking and Finance Law. He has over 18 years of experience advising on complex South African and cross‑border African transactions, acting for South Africa’s major banks, leading international banks, REITs, and corporates across the energy, financial services, industrials, real estate, infrastructure, and telecommunications sectors.

He has advised the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on a USD 40 million term loan to BPR Bank Rwanda PLC, Debswana as borrower under a USD 100 million Revolving Credit Facility with Standard Chartered Bank, and FirstRand Bank Limited (acting through Rand Merchant Bank) on a ZAR 1 billion Revolving Credit Facility to KWV Intellectual Properties. His practice spans acquisition finance, corporate lending, real estate finance, and debt restructurings, with extensive experience in cross‑border financing transactions across Africa.

Nick holds an LL.B (Dean's List) and a BCom in Economics and Law from Rhodes University (2004). He is an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa (2007) and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales (2024). He is recommended by Legal500 (2025) in Banking and Finance.
