Mduduzi Mamkeli

Mduduzi Mamkeli is a Consultant at Webber Wentzel in Johannesburg, specialising in mining and environmental law. He advises multinational mining houses, petroleum companies, energy producers, and industrial clients on regulatory compliance, security of tenure, mine closure liability, environmental authorisations, and high‑value capital projects. His practice covers upstream, midstream, and downstream mining and petroleum operations under the MPRDA, NEMA, and related environmental legislation, including waste, water, air quality, and environmental crimes laws.

He regularly handles administrative appeals, judicial review proceedings, and interdict applications involving competing rights, environmental compliance, and illegal mining. He has played a leading role in regulatory reform and policy engagement, including submissions on amendments to mining legislation, geosciences regulations, and mining charter developments. His commercial experience includes leading environmental and mining legal due diligence exercises for high‑value acquisitions, listings, and disposals; advising on the sale of mining and prospecting rights; and structuring regulatory aspects of complex mineral rights transactions and renewable energy developments.

Mduduzi has been a member of the Legal Advisory Committee and Charter Reference Group of the Minerals Council of South Africa (2018–2025) and an Advisory Council Member of the World Association of Mining Lawyers (2019). He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Mining and Prospecting Law and an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand, and is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa. He was a nominee at the African Legal Awards 2020 (In‑house Rising Star) and a nominee at the Lexology Global Counsel Awards 2020.
