Jonathan Barnes

Jonathan Barnes is a Partner in the Dispute Resolution practice at Bowmans' Johannesburg office, focusing on commercial litigation and international arbitration.

He is a qualified mediator and has represented clients in High Court litigation, private arbitration, and proceedings under the rules of the ICC, LCIA and AFSA, with arbitrations seated in Johannesburg, Paris, London and Mauritius. He has experience across transactional disputes, contractual claims, mining-related litigation and class actions. Notable matters include defending a global vehicle manufacturer in class action proceedings involving damages for billions of Rands, successfully defending South Africa's largest brewery against a multi‑million Rand damages claim in arbitration, and acting for an international energy company with enforcement proceedings in Mauritius, the UAE and South Africa. He also assisted a global private equity fund in resisting an application relating to a performance guarantee for the Twin City Power Project in Ghana.

Jonathan holds an LL.M from the University of Edinburgh, an LL.B and a B.A. from the University of the Witwatersrand.
