Benjamin Mbana

Benjamin Mbana is a Partner in the Johannesburg office, practicing in the firm's Tax Advisory Law practice. He brings extensive expertise in domestic and international corporate tax matters, with particular focus on M&A transactions, preference share funding, exchange control, corporate reorganizations, and cross-border investments. He specializes in structuring deals to optimize tax efficiency while ensuring compliance with complex regulatory frameworks across multiple jurisdictions.

Mr. Mbana has advised on numerous significant transactions, including Rand Merchant Bank's preference share financing for the 89MW Castle Wind Farm (the first private power deal for Sibanye-Stillwater), Community Investment Ventures Holdings' sale to Vodacom for ZAR 13.2 billion, Thebe Investment Corporation's ZAR 2.8 billion renewable energies refinancing transaction, and iThokazi's ZAR 310 million refinancing. He has also advised global financial institutions on loan facilities to Eskom Holdings and multinational corporations on cross-border structuring, tax treaty analysis, and dispute resolution with the South African Revenue Authority.

Benjamin holds a Master of Commerce in Taxation (2018), an Honours in Taxation (2012), and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting Sciences (2011), all from the University of Pretoria. He is a Chartered Tax Advisor through the South African Institute of Taxation and serves on SAIT's corporate and international tax technical working group.

He was named an Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellow (2023) and was recognized as the Ernst & Young Global Young Tax Professional of the Year (2014).
