Timothy McDougall

Timothy McDougall is a Partner in the Corporate Department and a member of the M&A Practice at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in mergers and acquisitions, private equity, and corporate and commercial law. He assists both local and international clients on compliance with South African company legislation, cross-border M&A, due diligence, and shareholder relations, working across multiple jurisdictions in Southern and East Africa, including South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Mauritius.

Tim has advised Standard Chartered Private Equity on its acquisition of a 13% stake in Choppies Enterprises and subsequently assisted Choppies Supermarkets South Africa in its acquisition of 21 retail outlets in South Africa; Rockwood Private Equity on its ZAR 5.3 billion disposal of Tsebo Holdings to Wendel SE; Capitalworks on its acquisition of Aon plc's shareholding in its African insurance brokerage operations across 11 countries; Alexander Forbes on the disposal of its short-term insurance business to Momentum Metropolitan Holdings for ZAR 1.938 billion; Africa Capitalworks on its acquisition of Wingu Africa Group; Adenia Partners on their acquisition of a majority interest in the Herholdt's Group; Oppenheimer Partners on their acquisition of Amrod from Carlyle; and Africa Capitalworks on its acquisition of a majority stake in Cipla Quality Chemicals Industries Limited, a listed pharmaceutical manufacturer in Uganda.

Tim holds a BA and an LL.B (cum laude) from Rhodes University, and completed the Foundation Course on Private Equity and Venture Capital at the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

He is ranked in Band 3 for Private Equity in South Africa by Chambers Global (2026), with clients describing him as "extremely strong and commercial", "extremely knowledgeable, thorough and commercial", and one who "delivers quality of work" and whose "ability to produce clear, practical and timely agreements makes him stand out".
