Taryn Hunkin

Taryn Hunkin is a Partner in the Shipping & Logistics department at Shepstone & Wylie's Durban office, specialising in customs and excise law and international trade remedies. She advises clients on various aspects of customs and excise law including tariff classification, valuation, and rules of origin, and regularly attends to internal dispute processes with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) on behalf of clients.

She previously worked for a leading pre‑shipment inspection company, where she gained experience in tariff classification and valuation for exports to other countries. In trade remedies, she has assisted clients with duty reduction applications, applications for the creation of rebate items, and various reviews of safeguard duties. She also provides advice regarding other government agencies including the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), and the National Consumer Commission (NCC) on trade and import regulatory issues. She is active in publishing articles on customs and trade, providing training for clients, drafting standard operating guidelines, and presenting at industry workshops.

Taryn holds a BCom (Management) and Bachelor of Law LLB (cum laude) from the University of South Africa (UNISA). She is an associated member of the Maritime Lawyers Association (MLA) and the South African Institute of Taxation (SAIT) as a Master Customs Tax Practitioner, and is a member of the South African Freight Association (SAAFF) via the firm.
