Quintus van der Merwe

Quintus van der Merwe is a Partner and Head of Shipping & Logistics (including Customs@Wylie) at Shepstone & Wylie's Durban office, specialising in customs and excise law, trade remedies, and logistics. He advises clients across the supply chain, including international insurers, manufacturers, large retailers, importers, exporters, brokers, clearing and forwarding companies, shipping lines, road hauliers, warehousemen, liquid bulk storage facilities, diesel rebate users, chandelling industry, container depots, and customs consultants, as well as representing a number of industry associations.

He regularly acts in trade remedies and advises on trade agreements and trade‑related matters. He has acted in international trade arbitrations before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and has testified in Washington DC as an expert witness. He is also regularly involved in litigation for his clients. He was initially part of the shipping team concentrating on contracts of affreightment, charter parties, and general admiralty work, and continues to support the shipping team while leading the customs practice.

Quintus holds a BCom and LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). He is an associated member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and the Maritime Lawyers Association (MLA).
