Nalini Maharaj

Nalini Maharaj is a Partner at Shepstone & Wylie's Johannesburg office, specialising in customs and excise law. She has extensive experience in customs and excise legislation, legal advice, and legal drafting, with deep expertise in illicit commodities including fuel, alcohol, tobacco, and clothing and textiles.

She has practised as an attorney in the Eastern Cape, specialising in Litigation and Corporate Law, before joining the Customs and Excise Division at SARS as a Legal Specialist, where she served for almost 12 years. At SARS, she represented the organisation on various committees and provided training and involvement in legislative and policy amendments. She also served on various dispute resolution forums within and outside SARS. Prior to joining Shepstone & Wylie, she established her own customs and excise consultancy practice.

Nalini holds an LLB from the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE).
