Mona Appalsamy

Mona Appalsamy is a Senior Associate at Shepstone & Wylie's Johannesburg office, specialising in customs and excise law and tax‑related matters. With nearly twenty years of experience, including service as a legal advisor and litigation specialist at the South African Revenue Service (SARS), she has deep expertise in tariff and valuation, counterfeit, diversion, seized goods, clearing agent liability, and customs and excise warehouse licensing.

At SARS, she provided legal advice to operations, drafted legal opinions, represented SARS on various committees, and conducted training for internal stakeholders. She also attended to national litigation for disputes related to diversion, seized goods, clearing agent liability, and tariff and valuation. She has experience in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) both within and outside SARS.

Mona holds a BCom (Law) and LLB.
