Nadine Mather

Nadine Mather is a Partner at Bowmans in Johannesburg, specialising in data protection law and employment law. She is a thought leader in both data protection and employment laws, advising clients on a wide range of data protection matters including cross-border data transfers, sharing of personal information with third parties, processing of special personal information, and compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Her employment expertise includes corporate restructuring, restraints of trade, retrenchments, employment equity, employee benefits, independent contractors, and unfair dismissals, as well as drafting employment contracts, policies and other employment-related agreements.

Nadine has advised FamilySearch on the digitisation of estate records with a South African government department; Pfizer on the data protection aspects of Covid-19 vaccine clinical trials; Massmart on disclosure requirements of employees' personal information to the National Treasury; and Bloomberg on the retention of personal information records. In the employment space, she has represented the Public Servants Association in the public sector wage dispute before the Constitutional Court, represented Bloomberg in a publicised unfair dismissal dispute, assisted FLSmidth with restructuring its workforce pursuant to a global merger, and advised Uber on workplace harassment. She also works closely with corporate colleagues to advise on the employment and data protection consequences of commercial transactions.

Nadine holds an LL.B cum laude and a BA in Law and Clinical Psychology. She is a practising attorney affiliated with the Legal Practice Council, a member of the South African Society for Labour Law, and a committee member of the SASLAW Young Scholars Society. She is an author of the Employment Law Update column in De Rebus magazine.

She has been ranked as Up and Coming for Employment Law by Chambers Global (2026) and as a Next Generation Partner by The Legal 500 (2024–2026). She has conducted presentations on POPIA at conferences and webinars, participated in panel discussions with the Information Regulator, and delivered lectures at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg.
