John Paul Ongeso

John Paul Ongeso is a Senior Associate in Bowmans' Johannesburg office and a member of the firm's Technology, Media & Telecommunications (TMT) sector group, focusing on telecommunications regulatory advice, data protection, consumer protection, and compliance.

He advises clients on a broad range of regulatory matters, including broad-based Black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) in the ICT and other sectors, access to information, lawful intercept, e-commerce, the regulation of films, games and streaming services, encryption technology, and cybercrimes. Notable matters include advising a large fibre network operator on B-BBEE requirements for the transfer of control of telecoms licenses; advising a large e-commerce company on data protection, consumer protection and encryption technology requirements; advising a multinational automotive manufacturer on POPIA compliance for in-vehicle connect services; and advising a luxury sports car manufacturer on compliance with South Africa's data protection, telecommunications and surveillance laws for in-vehicle connect services. He also advised a global manufacturer of plastic and rubber automotive parts on data-transfer agreements and led local counsel in 9 other African jurisdictions on the legality of electronic signatures.

John Paul holds an LL.B (with Distinction), an LL.M in Public International Law, and a PhD (Corporate Criminal Liability in International Law) from the University of the Witwatersrand.
