Jan Kruger

Jan Kruger is a Partner in the Cape Town office, practicing in the firm's Banking and Finance Law practice. He brings extensive experience in managing large, complex, and cross-border transactions, leveraging his background working with international financial institutions to offer clients pragmatic, risk-tailored advice.

With expertise in structured finance, preference share funding (including BEE transactions), asset and leveraged finance, syndicated lending, and property finance, Jan works on some of the largest and most complex deals across Africa and beyond. He has advised on transactions including Pick n Pay's ZAR 1.2 billion green loan facility, Capitec Bank's acquisition of Mercantile Bank, the Heineken/Distell merger financing, and multiple BEE transaction restructurings for major South African banks and corporates. His tax law qualifications further enhance his proficiency in tax-driven funding structures.

Jan holds a BCom, LLB, LLM in Constitutional Practice and Human Rights Law, and an LLM in Tax. He is an attorney and notary of the High Court of South Africa. He has been inducted into Legal 500's Hall of Fame for Banking and Finance (2025-2026), ranked by Chambers Global in Band 3 for Banking and Finance in South Africa (2017-2026), and recommended by Who's Who Legal for Banking in South Africa (2024).
