Gary Oertel

Gary Oertel is an Executive in the firm's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Law practice at ENS, based in South Africa. He specialises in formal and informal distressed restructuring, insolvencies, business rescue, insolvency inquiries, and liquidation applications.

He has advised major banking institutions, development finance institutions, and other creditors on insolvency and business rescue proceedings, as well as the boards of listed companies on their rights and duties. He has also assisted a major retailer with its informal restructuring. His experience includes cross-border work, including advising a major creditor bank on a large administration spanning Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Gary holds a BA and LLB from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Diploma in Insolvency Law and Practice. He is admitted as an attorney and conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa (with right of appearance).

He has been consistently recognized by Chambers Global in Restructuring/Insolvency (2017-2026) and by Best Lawyers in Insolvency and Reorganization Law, having been named Insolvency and Reorganization Lawyer of the Year in 2020.
