Clare-Alice Vertue

Clare-Alice Vertue is a Partner in the Cape Town office, practicing in Competition Law. She is a competition law specialist advising on all aspects of competition law, ranging from merger control to prohibited practices and litigation across a number of Sub-Saharan African jurisdictions.

Ms. Vertue has significant experience in the competition concerns arising in the pay-TV, construction, tobacco, and aviation sectors, and has also been involved in civil damages litigation arising from cartel conduct. Prior to joining Webber Wentzel, she clerked for Justice Johann van der Westhuizen at the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

She holds an LLB from the University of Pretoria (2010) and a Competition Law Certificate Course from the University of the Witwatersrand (2016). She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa.

She has been named by Best Lawyers as a leading individual (2025-2026) and by Legal 500 as a Next Generation Partner (2024-2025), having previously been recognized as a Rising Star.
