Cindy-Lee Bekeer

Cindy-Lee Bekeer is a Senior Associate based in Johannesburg. Her primary practice area is Labor Law, and she specialises in health and safety law with experience in the mining and energy sectors.

She advises on mine and occupational health and safety laws, compensation for occupational injuries and diseases, environmental law and construction, as well as related litigation.

She also advises on the impact and management of workplace health and safety risks in commercial transactions, including business disposals or acquisitions, and conducts due diligence investigations and assessments. Her experience includes advising on environmental, mine and occupational health and safety regulatory matters under legislation such as the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mine Health and Safety Act, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, and other relevant environmental and mining laws.

She reviews project finance, construction, mining, energy and commercial agreements, represents clients in fatal accident investigations and inquiry proceedings under the Mine Health and Safety Act, advises on regulatory requirements for constructing renewable energy plants, drafts representations to the Health and Safety Inspectorate of the Department of Minerals and Petroleum Resources and the Department of Employment and Labour, and provides legal liability training to clients and internal teams.

She holds a Certificate in Mining and Prospecting Law from the University of the Witwatersrand (2018), an LLM from the University of the Western Cape (2015) and an LLB from the University of the Western Cape (2013). She is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and a member of the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh), the Environmental Law Association (ELA) and Women in Mining South Africa (WiMSA).
