Wally Horak

Wally Horak is the Head of Tax at Bowmans' Cape Town office, advising clients on cross-border M&A, financing, transfer pricing, exchange control, international share incentive schemes and expatriate secondments. He is known for developing tax-efficient structures to facilitate investment into and out of South Africa, advising private equity funds, venture capital firms and large corporates.

He has particular expertise in advising international investors in the renewables sector and US private equity funds on mining investments in Africa. Notable matters include advising the Old Mutual Hybrid Equity Fund on preference share funding, Alexander Forbes on foreign operations, Climate Fund Managers on renewable energy investments, Sanlam on cross-border transactions, and AB InBev on cross-border funding arrangements.

Wally holds a BA-Law, LL.B and LL.M (with research at the University of Munich) from Stellenbosch University, and a HDIP Tax Law from the University of the Witwatersrand. He is fluent in English, Afrikaans and German.

He is recognised by Chambers Global as a Senior Statesman for Tax (2022–2026) and was previously ranked in Band 1 for seven consecutive years. He has been inducted into the Legal 500 Hall of Fame for Tax in South Africa and is a member of the South African Fiscal Association.
