Stephen von Schirnding

Stephen von Schirnding is an Executive in the Banking and Finance practice at ENS, specialising in Banking and Finance Law. He advises on debt capital markets (including securitisation), general debt finance, private equity, and banking and securities law, serving most major South African and international banks, financial institutions, state‑owned companies, the National Treasury, and listed and unlisted corporates both onshore and offshore.

His practice spans over 30 years, covering high‑profile DMTN programmes, securitisations, asset‑backed note structures, repackaging note programmes, debenture funding, distressed debt restructuring, creditor work‑outs, sustainability‑linked funding, syndicated and bilateral loan funding, and private equity transactions. He has extensive experience advising on complex structured finance transactions and has been recognised by IFLR1000 (Capital markets: Debt, Structured finance and securitization, Banking and Finance; Highly Regarded), Chambers Global (Capital Markets: Debt), The Legal 500 (Banking and Finance), and Best Lawyers® (Banking and Finance Law, Structured Finance Law, Capital Markets Law).

Stephen holds a BA and LLB from the University of Cape Town, an LLM and Diploma in Advanced Banking from the University of Johannesburg, and is admitted as an attorney and notary public of the High Court of South Africa.
