Alan Jeftha

Alan Jeftha is a Partner at Dentons South Africa, heading the local Intellectual Property (IP), Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT) Departments, specializing in Intellectual Property Law. He has over 32 years of experience in the technology, broadcasting and media sectors, with expertise in IP & TMT, corporate and commercial law, and M&A transactions.

Alan holds an LL.M in Intellectual Property from the University of Cape Town, with a focus on bio‑technology and its interface with IP. He has served as an IP specialist on the Standing Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property (SACIP) since 1997 and acts as an Adviser to the South African government's Department of Trade and Industry. His IP practice includes licensing of technology transfers, media and IP commercialisation, and advising both franchisees and franchisors. He has advised on numerous M&A transactions, IP registration and protection, dispute resolution, and TMT contracts. Notable matters include advising a public broadcaster on media law, constitutional law, and High Court litigation; registering 3D inverse perspective technology as a patent for Three‑D Signs, which is now used in sporting arenas worldwide; and advising on copyright, design, and performers' rights matters.

He holds an LL.B from the University of the Western Cape (1979) and an LL.M in Intellectual Property from the University of Cape Town (2011). He is a member of the Law Society of South Africa (1982).
