David Geral

David Geral is a Partner in the Johannesburg office, practicing in the firm's Pension Law and financial services regulatory practice. He specialises in pensions, healthcare, and insurance, as well as investment management and financial services regulation, advising local corporations, retirement funds, medical schemes, and service providers on governance, contracting, compliance, and dispute resolution.

Mr. Geral has represented clients before the Constitutional Court, High Court, Financial Services and Medical Schemes Appeal Boards, the Pension Funds Adjudicator, and the Council for Medical Schemes. Notable matters include representing Transnet in the defence and settlement of South Africa's first pensioner class action (the largest civil claim and class action in South African history), advising the lead investor in South Africa's first social impact bond, and advising South Africa's largest pension fund administrator on an industry-wide FSB inspection. He has also performed benefits due diligence for numerous significant corporate transactions, including the Alexander Forbes Group private equity exit and listing, Marriott Hotels' acquisition of Protea Hotels' administration business, and the separation of SAB and CCBSA.

He holds BA and LLB degrees from the University of Cape Town and is a CEDR Accredited Commercial Mediator and a notary public. He is the author of the Pensions title in LexisNexis Law of South Africa and contributed to 'A Legal Framework for Impact' (2021). He has been recognized by Chambers and Partners as a Recognised Practitioner for Insurance and received an Acritas Star Lawyer rating, and was shortlisted for the TrustLaw World Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year Award in 2018.
